Reed stood in the doorway of the empty room. He moved across the space, trying to judge the size. He stopped at the window. It looked to the south. The view wasn’t as good as the one from his room, but it would get more sun. That might be nice. His room felt dark even in the summer.
“What’s up?” Maria asked from the doorway.
“Huh? Oh, nothing,” he said. “I was thinking about switching rooms.”
“You too? Everyone’s got itchy feet all of a sudden. You guys should count yourselves lucky. At least you don’t have to sleep next to a hospital bed.”
“It won’t be forever,” Reed said. “Wait—the girls are moving?”
“Kyra is,” Maria said. “She needs her independence, I think.” Maria lowered her voice and glanced down the hall before she made her next statement. “Lizzy is being a little clingy. It’s understandable, I guess. But Kyra isn’t equipped to be a big sister yet. She needs more time to adjust to the idea.”
“We all do,” Reed said.
“Well it’s a good thing we have this giant house. You guys can move all you want, just clean up your old room when you leave it behind.”
“Sure,” Reed said. “You think it’s a good thing though? Really?”
Her face changed. She was tired of this conversation. They had gone through it a few too many times. Maria wouldn’t deny what had happened with the moon and Lizzy’s disappearance. How could she? They were all still living with the ramifications. But, Maria did seem pretty anxious to move beyond the notion that the house itself, or at least its geographic location, was dangerous. They had the calendar marked. They all knew what day they would make themselves scarce.
“We’re on the market, Reed. We can’t do much more than that. As soon as we’re under contract, we’ll vacate. You can do your part by making sure the house is always presentable, inside and out.”
“I am,” he said.
“I know you are. I wasn’t trying to suggest otherwise.”
They both heard the intercom beep.
Maria moved for the door. “Just remember to clean up in your old room if you move, okay?”
He went to the corner and began pacing off the space. He wanted to make sure it was bigger before he went to the trouble of trying to move everything.
